~ How to install Cosworth MX1 cams, springs, and head gasket! ~

I now have a couple cam installs under my belt and I think a pretty good write up to show for it. There will be one more coming that is more for those who aren't doing springs or head gasket, it will be about half as long and won't have to cover near as many items so stay tuned for that one.

I also would like to encourage any of you with technical skill to attempt at least one of my "How to" installs. Not only will you save yourself wheel barrows full of money that you can put on other mods but you gain something even more valuable; knowledge.

Plain and simple you "WILL" be a better tuner, and you "WILL" have a better sense of what functions change when you key the numbers into a cell. Every time you pull up a table to make a change in your tuning software you can actually run the mechanical functions through your head and visualize what will happen. I'm sorry if I sound like I am preaching from a soap box but I was having a conversation with someone about the wonders of MIVEC and how it was designed to work off hydraulic pressure and the person it was with was lost.

Now on to my next point for installing your own gear. No one else will treat you car or parts as good as you do. I get PM's all the time from people who have had a bad experience with a shop and need help to fix it because they dropped all their cash on the parts and install and now they are stuck without a car or a fix. All because they were trying to save a little cash and went to a lower rate shop that was giving a deal and come to find out there deal didn't turn out so good and the shop won't help.

Thats right I'm still preaching, and let me move on to my next point. :$:
Cold hard cash that ain't easy to come by right now. So wanna save some? PUT YOUR OWN PARTS IN! Take the :$: you would have spent on having someone install your parts and buy the tools you need (If you need any) then not only can you do your car but you can have your buddy pay you to do his! BAM free cams/turbo/clutch whatever. They all take the same tools!

Lets put it this way Joey put his own cams in using my tools and it took him around 5 hours of actual work time to do it. This is also the same guy who took 3 days to install a AFR gauge :freak: granted with the gauge he did have directions in english with clearly marked wiring diagrams.... oh wait.... :idhitit: :cockblocked: :harhar:

I would also like to mention that during this install it would be a perfect time to add in a turbo and injectors. If you’re not going to try and go crazy with big number horsepower and just want a bad ass daily driver you only need to go with 800cc or 1000cc injectors and a 50-55 lb/min turbo. On the stock pump it will get you well into the high 300's on a good Mustang dyno. :drive:

Discuss and add in your information and I will update accordingly :yeahthat:

Great advice, and awesome How To. Definitely going to give it a shot at some point. Thanks Hollywood, that's awesome. A ton of work went into this, and it's much appreciated.

u da mutha F-ing man!!
COple things. I shaved the lower bracket to remove front most 10mm bolt from botom of oil pan. I also took off 3 bolts to remove coolant piece off head without taking any of the hoses off.
Thanks how much hp on a green do you think you gained with cams. I know about the drop in psi and the other benifits I really did not intend on doing it but sudenley I am starting to think a little more about it and getting the cosie like you did.
WOW
great write up man!
will definitely be using this in the near future!

Can you explain the "Shaved" part a little more? Like the purpose for doing so and what you actually shaved.
Couldn't get the front most bolt out due to the bracket below it> here you can see i Shaved a few mm's off the the bracket webbing underneath the bolt that allowed me to remove.

Here you can see the difference in lobe size. Yeah, Jun are man sized!

Also if you want to get the crank pulley/bolt off. You get a breaker bar with a 22 socket on it. You set the long breaker bar against the ground, while the car is on jack stands, and you then turn over the engine. Make sure you have the injectors off or unclipped.
wow soo much great help. Hollywood you are the man.

Its funny you say that because we used to do this with the 3000GT's when installing underdrive pulleys. I had a toll made specifically for it
I avoid putting it in my write up though for certain reasons but a good way for some to do the whole job with out any air tools for sure.
Is there any point in a underdrive pully for our cars?

no....
lol didnt think so but jus figured while it was all apart if it was worth it.

How long would it take without cams?

Depends on how mechanically challenged you are... seeming that you are asking. Probably longer then normal.
lol im sorry I meant without doing the head gasket.

You mean just springs and cams or just cams?
Got any pic of the stock cams vs cosworth mx1s?
