Guys I am looking for ideas why my Evo X FQ300 SST occasionally fails to start immediately. About once every few weeks I will go to start the car and the it will crank over at a good rate but there is no ignition at all. After about 30 secs of cranking it will start to splutter and start. This can happen after the car has been standing or just been driven and through any temperature range.

So far Mitsu UK have been useless at diagnosing it, and I have had them change the relays in TSB-10-13-002 just in case; and I swapped the horn and fuel pump relays but so far no change.

Any ideas, as most of the time it fires first time and is fine?

it sounds like a cold start problem to me.

I had that, got my car remapped for more power and...... magic!! now i dont have any problems.:godance:

Ok so...

"Have you checked your spark plugs?"
No, will get Mitsu to do this.

" how longs it been happening?"
Since I have owned the car about 20 months

" has it been cold? has it ever happened while the car was already warmed up?"
It can happen from cold or warm; no real pattern to this.

" Did they also change the fuel pump relay?"
No but I swapped the horn and fuel pump relays over and no change; and the horn still works

I guess it could be an intermittant immboliser problem; how could I recognise if the immobiliser is still active?

Yes I changed the MFI relay with the others. I have noticed that occaisonally even though the car starts fine it seems hesitant at low revs and quite jerky through the change to 2nd; could this be related?

Not sure what you mean by lack of power in 1st gear. Are you sure it's not just the first gear limiter? In 2008 MRs first gear is limited by throttle, in newer models it is limited by boost, but both make it a dog when trying to start quickly in 1st. You can remove the limit with tuning software.

Shifts from 1st to 2nd are always going to be a little harsh until the transmission warms up. They should be smooth once the fluid is warm.

I think the power issue is best described as throttle lag; nothing and then a big power dump.

Interstingly my plugs were fine and I have replaced the fuel pump relay with the alternative blue one and the car has suddenly switched back to running smooth. Fingers crossed it was the fuel pump relay not delivering the fuel required due to under voltage because of the poor connection the old style relay makes.

So as I said the hesitant power on acceleration has gone; looks like the fuel pump relay was responsible for that, but I had another failure to start yesterday morning. Car is turning over healthly but not ignition on any cylinders for about 15 cranks and then a few start to fire and then the engine splutters into life.

Any ideas?
