2010 X GSR, 15k miles, 100% stock. I literally only drive my car like 1 day a week now, as I live at work.

So... Lately my car has developed a horrible noise. It's loudest when I'm out of gear coasting to a light. It sounds like one of those old hand crank fire alarms... It's a loud WOOOOOOOOOOO that's almost like having Ric Flair riding along with me.

It seems to be coming from dead center... Like straight ahead of the shifter by the firewall.

It makes a loud, higher pitched WOOO/Whine noise when I am accelerating at any speed in any gear (though its most audible in 2nd and 4th). It makes the noise intermittently while I hold speeds. It of course does this on the freeway with cruise control as well.

I had it make this god awful sound for a week straight and I took it to the stealership and just like any good problem it COMPLETELY STOPPED.

They checked it out but gave me back my car with a diagnosis of "nothin' wrong"

Is this my transfer case or should I be looking elsewhere?

It sounds like it could be a transfer case. The next time it's making the go to the dealer and get a technician to road test with you so they can hear the noise you are concerned about and then they can't say 'unable to reproduce' when it's at the dealer

interesting that it stopped. how loud is it though? my car sounds like a firetruck sometimes during acceleration and coasting and I haven't had any further problems with it [yet].

Yeah, the whole transmission, center diff, T-Case, and front diff can be very very loud. There are so many gears in there changing power direction- including two ring and pinions. The front diff (in the T-Case) is a helical gear LSD so it is noisy just by design.

Change your drive line fluid and look at the fluid, if there is metal in there you have a more serious issue. If they come out clean then it's just mechanical noise.

I hate loud exhausts but lately I want one just so I don't have to hear all the clatter.

It's louder then the stock stereo on 30... Especially lately since it's getting worse. It did a nasty grinding/howl sound when I took a hard right and slid sideways slightly.

I was thinking about getting the fluid changed, but I'm afraid that if it is broken my stupid dealership will try and blame that.

My car is 110% stock and I baby the damn thing except for occasionally driving it... oh I dunno like an evo should be driven. I'm just afraid this damn thing is gonna grenade and I'm gonna be stuck with a bill

How are they charging you every time you bring it in?

It sounds like the T-Case, can you drain it and examine the gear oil? There is a magnet on the drain plug.

Even though I'm under warranty, since they couldn't find anything wrong with it they charged me a diagnostic fee. It's making the noise loud and proud right now but I don't dare take it in because if it stops then they'll charge me again

I have a mechanic so I'll have him pull the plug and check it

Could they dick me over on my warranty if I change the fluid or even have my mechanic look at it?

One of the guys at the dealer told me that the boss of the service department is pretty much guaranteed to try and site abuse as the reason for breakage if that is indeed the case. Lucky for me, my car is completely stock.

Sounds like you need to play some hardball with the dealer, I would not give them any excuse. Take it to another dealer, they all do the same warranty work. Complain to Mitsu corporate.

I'd tell this service manager there is a problem, your not happy, and would like them to pull the plug and look at the fluid. You paid for a warranty and you should get service out of it.

Whoa, charging a diag fee for a car under warranty is not kosher. If nothing is found and the car is under warranty, then Mitsu warranty should be paying that fee. That's how it was when I worked for GM Corporate. Looking at warranty history, we'd see claims for "unable to replicate". Also, they are charging you a diagnostic fee without providing a diagnosis? I think it's time to go ahead and play hardball with them. I'd demand a refund for the diag fees since they failed to actually diagnose anything. Once that is done, change dealerships.

Contact MOA and report the dealer and the charges. Those inspections should be covered and free. COME ON GUYS!!!!! know you rights.

Definitely sounds like a bad TC whine. Mine whines but not that loud, nor does it do it coasting in neutral. Hope the dealer doesn't give you the run around again.
Well don't let the runaround happen. Have your letter to MItsuOA and the BBB, ready and in hand.

Glad to hear it's getting fixed. Better early in life with warranty than later in life without!!! It's crazy how Mitsu's parts are hit or miss.
