Those of you running Star Specs...how much life are you getting out of them before they are dead? Per Tire Rack they are in a whole other CATEGORY from the Pilot SS so I'm starting to wonder which is better. Can't find any more info on the Tire Rack performance categories.

Apparently the stock Advans are in the same category as my old favorite the KDW 2s, and rated lower lol.

SS - higher treadwear, more expensive, great reviews
Star Specs - lower tread wear, cheaper, great reviews, higher performance category?

Don't care about road noise or comfort at all, price doesn't bother me as long as it's worth it. Care about performance and how long they last. Basically once I find replacement tires for sale on Tire Rack I'm buying them so I just need to figure out what I want.

Edit: Did find a brief definition of the categories, according to them the Max Perf Summer is the highest one, with the Pilot SS being #1. The Star Specs are near the top in the next category down and about $200 cheaper for a set of 4. Guess I'll stick to the SS.

Would love to find someone who has used all 3 (Pilot, Star Specs, stockers)....

Just to clarify what I had meant earlier - the star specs gripped great for the first 3-5 laps, then didn't grip nearly as well after they got hot. The RS3s did not grip as well as the star specs for the first 3-4 laps until they got warmed up, but were more consistent overall. My experience with them was consistent with the reviews I had read on both.
yes exactly what I gathered from my research regarding the specs. Haven't tracked the rs3s but does take a bit of warm up.
star spec is an extreme performance summer tire

pilot ss is a max perf summer tire

extreme is a higher catagory but i wouldnt shake a stick at the michelin pilot ss...i have pilot alpin pa3s which is the "winter" version and they have better grip than my summer tires.

the pilot ss have a higher speed rating...i dont know if you 186+ in your evo but they are rated for a higher top speed rating...y (pilot ss) vs w (star spec)

youve got this backwards extreme is a higher category than max perf. advan ado8 potenza re11s and star specs among others are all extreme perf. tires...i would argue that the pilot ss could sneak into that category as well.
Yeah thanks for clarifying. I was wrong. I called Tire Rack yesterday and got myself straightened out. The guy said the Star Specs were track tires that you could use on the street, and that the PSS were street tires you could drive on the track.

If the Star Specs had better tread wear rating I'd probably get them, but I think the PSS will be the best choice for me.

Talking to my wife about it yesterday some more "Make sure you get what you want, you need good tires". Hell SHE bought me my Conti DWS as a surprise. She saved for months so she could get them. I was going to wait a little while longer before I bought them because money was tight for me at the time, but the weather was cooling a bit and I was noticing it with the Advans.
with the amount you drive your car you are worried about the starspecs mi? Im confused.

I just want to maximize the dollars spent. I recognize I can't have everything, but the things I DON'T care about are ride comfort and road noise. Cost doesn't matter if the performance/longevity are there.
Understood.
The problem is the concepts of Performance and longevity are normally always fighting each other. :)

...unless you're willing to pay, which I am.
