Hi everyone. I'm a perspective evo x buyer. Once I get my evo I plan on tuning it up to 450-500 hp at least. My question is, which evo is a better buy from a performance stand point totally ignoring cost. If you had the choice between either MR or GSR for a tuner and or track car which would you pick? Also, I will definitely have have 400+ horsepower in my evo minimum so I want to know how the SST would hold up. How much torque can the SST trannie handle?

If you have unlimited funding and you want to have the fastest car on the track, the MR is for you.

The SST won't be able to handle that much power in stock form, however, you can probably upgrade it in the near future. Just like how the DSG gear box in the GTI can be upgraded to handle more power. I would assume it could get pricey to upgrade the SST thought, because it can cost up to 8k to replace the stock SST unit, so expect to shell out around 10k for the gear box upgrade.

o wow :( 10k just for a gearbox upgrage? Couldn't you get new 6 speed installed for cheaper than that? Wow, I think I might have to go with the GSR if I end up getting the evo. Price is kind of an issue for me so That sounds alot cheaper to mod.

Ya, I think you are better off with GSR, there is already an aftermarket clutch for the Evo X that can handle 500-700 hp...

There has been a lot of speculation about which model of X will hold up the best to high horsepower tuning. So far the clear-cut winner has been the GSR due to its sturdy 5 speed MT.
While the SST is going to kick some serious ass in the long-run, rightnow it remains a unknown factor in the quest for more power.
Even with price not being a factor, for sheer longevity and the ability to hold up to punishment, I would have to pick the GSR.

I allways laugh when people are all sicked for the MR, In a tech video I watched it says that it can easily overheat the SST tranny if pushed hard!! WTF they said to pull over immediatly and let it sit for 20min. That just gives me a great big boat of confidence while I'm on a track!

MR SST cannot handle as much power as the GSR and its not even close to being mod friendly as the GSR. The SST has shown repeatedly that it overheats on the race track fairly quick. And overall, whats the point of owning a sports car if its not stick? :shades:

how much extra torque do they mean when they say extra torque though?

500ft or more still seems out of reach at this point
