I'm really getting an "itch" to mod my car. I was going to wait until I pay the car off but that's just not going to happen. What would be some good starter mods to get me going for an MR? I'd like to have a little more HP w/o worrying about the transmission blowing up or w/e it does at high Torque/HP. I also don't want to break the bank really. >.>

There isnt really a cheap way to mod your car, but for basic mods you can do intake, TBE, UICP, FMIC, EBC or MBC, and a tune. Use the search function because this is the 10000000th thread about beginners modding. Also search the parts/brands your interested in. good luck with your build.

exhaust $600
panel filter $50

no tune.

when you want more power then buy the rest of the bolt ons front mount ic, intake, test pipe, down pipe, ebcs, etc im sure i missed something. after you acquire all those parts THEN get tuned.

there is absolutely no reason you should pay anyone to tune your car multiple times.

but seriously if your car is new...preserve the warranty you wont even have to go back to stock for repairs at the dealer. most of them overlook exhaust if youre still on a stock tune with stock everything else.

seriously watch the exhaust videos in the general section from one who has been in your exact position enjoy the stock power because once you change things and start getting tuned it will spiral out of control. i could no doubt have a used gtr right now if it werent for the extra money ive put into my mr. which is still somewhat undriveable. has been all winter. shit tune. oh and DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM AMS

edit. heres a link to a mod map of sorts...what to do in what order. http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33220
also buy trans fluid and a filter and change that after about 10k miles.

First mod for any MR owner (especially one concerned with the SST Lasting) should be to change your transmission filter and fluid, and on a regular scheduled basis. And just like it is REQUIRED in the Nissan GT-R (POS service at 1,250 miles) ....owners should change out the original fluid after a 1,500 miles (first change) and then every 15-25,000 miles depending on driving conditions. Now I'm NOT saying you must use OUR fluid and or filter, but please for the love of baby Jesus.....just change it.

I've had 4-5 customers over the last month that were all calling for pricing on transmission builds because of various shifting and drivability issues. These cars varied from 7,500 miles to 65,000 miles, and all had different stages of mods. With that said, EVERY ONE of those customers DID NOT need anything more then a fluid and filter change to have there car running normal again.

Pressure is EVERYTHING with a DCT !!!

I have a CBE, Intercooler pipes, and Panel filter and a stage 1 tune. Im very happy with the car except for the tune (knock at the very top). Im currently datalogging the car to have the tune ironed out. Next is a catted test pipe to install my AEM uego AFR gauge.

we wont typically do E-tunes- unless its touch ups on a dyno/street tune done in house---

The evo X responds excellent to a simple catback, HFC, 3 port and a tune- with a drop in--

The evo X engine compartment sees an immense amount of heat and ECU compensations due to that... so in many cases unless you are going to make big power (which requires turbo upgrade etc) stick to the factory airbox.

If you have an MR your choices for tuning are either Razorlab or Kozmic. They are both very heavy into the reseaching of how to handle this transmission. In addition, they both personally own a car with an SST. Razor has a ralliart, not an MR.

I will be going to razor for my next tune.

Kozmic....aka Eric at SSP Texas also tuned the SSP Time Attack X Mr.....aka, highest WHP X MR.

@Jeremy - thanks for the advice on the SST trans fluid change intervals. It's an expensive service but if changing it early the first time makes a difference in its longevity, that would be worth it.

@Sly: As for mods, stay stock for as long as you can. Keep that warranty.

When you have enough spare cash that you can afford to fix anything that breaks, do whatever mods you want. =)

I am hoping to stay stock for a while, the car is enjoyable the way it comes.

When it does come time to mod, if I still have a dealer that I care about, I will start with mods that they are okay with. (likely to be CBE, panel filter)

If you're the type with the time, tools, and talent to do all maintenance yourself, you might not care as much about dealer approval or warranty.

we just sold our Ralliart that we used for development- and have X MR's with our tial kits on and BBX series turbos-

We also work together with Bryan (which he will confirm) on SST tweaking ;)

Im pretty sure AMS can handle MR tuning too ;) quite thoroughly-

ams couldnt tune my car (08 mr) worth a damn. either that or they didnt care to tune it properly. i was told that there is nothing wrong with the tune. i paid for the tune twice over...bought a new turbo on their recomendation. the issue ended up being a cracked ex. mani. car has misfired and not been 100% since they tuned it and that was 6 months ago. they may be good with the stock turbo...another tuner there may have been able to fix my car properly...maybe but after their gross incompetence i have chosen to no longer do business with them. that and they are not very nice people to deal with. after a $275 tune and another $250 to swap out my wg actuator that they said had "failed" or they didnt know but of course when they put the new one in "problem solved" but it wasnt...same issues as when i brought the car to them.

their bottom line...and i quote "its a mechanical issue called compressor surge...it can't be tuned out. you should contact the manufacturer and make sure you have the anti surge porting"

then after making sure and returning they still could not make my car run right. they didnt even give me a complete dyno plot of my torque...i was told "the lead on the dynojet was broken" my immediate thought was -how can you tune a car without an accurate torque curve- but i dont know the first thing about tuning nor do i claim to. everything ive learned has been either from good friends, at meets, or on this forum.

i would much rather see cobb or cbrd (or any other reputable company for that matter) get the money because their parts are great if not better than ams.

while ams does make beautiful turbo kits and very good looking parts...they just dont back anything up and their service technicians are no better than youd find at a dealership...on top of all of that they charge almost double what other local shops charge for installs...shit they are even more expensive than a dealer.

i feel i have been wronged by them and that they are unwilling to fix my car. this problem has persisted so long that i will hopefully be trading my car in for a new evo soon. which will go stock...maybe exhaust...welll okay exhaust and probably a tune but thats it no more turbo swap games for me. my experience with ams completely turned me off to them.

When you plan to do up your trans, SSP will be there for everything and anything. BUT of course you gotta prepare to drop serious $$$ with trans upgrades :)

I wanted something to add some power quick and cheap before I do a full build. I bought a tactrix cable, evo scan, added a cheap invidia down pipe/test pipe and a drop in filter. REALLY woke the car up. I think I've got less that 300 bucks in everything and VD says I'm at 316hp.

Hey there you go for less than $300... But my advise to you is go LEGIT. Save up that money and mod the Evo with the best parts. When you get into it it's gonna be very addictive tho. lol
