I speak from first hand experience. You will always be spotted before you spot the officer. They are out there and by the time the detector goes off you have already been clocked atleast twice. Consider saving your money and slowing down. Just a suggestion. Be safe.

All I hear in this thread is blah blah blah wah wah wah. NO ONE in here drives "safe" PERIOD! Unfortunately you were caught and thats the name of the game. Every single car on the road breaks multiple traffic laws from the time they pull out of the parking space to the time they arrive at there location. Cops will tell you this, and a judge will tell you this. Not stating that street racing or going 100+mph is cool, but NO ONE HERE is in the position to make judgement on your choice of actions since they/WE are all guilty of breaking the traffic laws on daily basis ourselves.

-End Rant

With that said, I've owned an escort and it worked good. I prefer my current valentine that i've been using for a few years now. I paid $399 for it and highly recommend it. I spot cops before they spot me especially when they're using KA band. Everyone here is right in regards to laser though. That is pretty instant and NO radar detector can save you from that. I have seen Jammers in action and they do work, so you may want to look into that. Radar detectors are not the be all end all, but they provide a better sense of situation awareness.

Good luck and I expect a flame or two for this post haha

When you say you speak from first hand experience, are you an LEO? Are you trained to use radar?

I use a radar detector and it has saved me at least half a dozen times. In one instance the radar detector picked up a cop hiding and I slowed down in time. He did pick up a speeding signature and pulled over the car that passed me on the left as I slowed down.

Just get the escort 9500ix, especially in Chicago, trust me. I had one there for 4 years and no tickets...

Cops in Chicago only use the always on Ka Band, and they are the only ones who use that band. You know they are there way before they have line of sight with you. The GPS feature will block all other signals out after a bit, it's a VERY effective system in Chicago.

Do people really just decide to do a pull in any random spot to triple digits? Yeah no kidding you will get caught.

If you want to go fast you should be very familiar with the road and KNOW there are no cops.

Well your rant fails to take into account that he posted another thread detailing how he was street racing and being clocked at 110mph was after he had slammed on his brakes. But if you wanna go with the "everyone else does it" stance then sure, whatever.

I've read the thread that he made yesterday hence my mentioning of "street racing or doing speeds excess of 100+mph". My point was to just recommend a radar detector that you think works good and keep it moving.

Sorry, i wasn't very clear.

If a cop sees you going 25+ over the limit, he can probably give you a ticket in most states for reckless endangerment, enthusiast driving, or something similar. Might not be able to give you a speeding ticket, but if you're going wayyy over the limit, the dash cam will probably be pretty damning for you.

Yes he can, however the method of obtaining the speed calibration must be an approved method, (e.g. radar, pace, etc)

Always love when people think a radar will actually save you from really speeding.

Newsflash...most states use lasers now and a radar does nothing other than let you know you've been hit with a laser, which by then it is too late. Has happened to me twice in the past, even with the best radar on the market.

If you really want to open it up and race or do triple digits you need to find a decent area where you know there won't be any cops.
You really have no idea what you are talking about. I have avoided citations multiple times by using my radar detector. Just Stop man. Im not even talking racing or driving recklessly, i'm talking 10-15 over the speed limit on an interstate highway, where the radar picks up the cop 3 miles out.

I agree, they wont always save you but I can say they saved me in the past multiple times. Lots of :duh: comments in here.

I also see the Ka Band being used here in Socal by CHP. :)

No, not all of us do. We take long road trips up highway 5 where the speed limit is 70, and I drive 80 with not a soul in sight and its not dangerous. Stop your trolling.

Around here (Arizona) 20+ over is a criminal offense. You WILL be arrested and your car WILL be impounded. 20+ or >85 MPH anywhere (max freeway posted limit in the state is 75).

So drive accordingly.

BTW popo are state licensed - there is no such thing as their own district. They can write/arrest anywhere in the state.

in California its not. They will require a court appearance and you are not allowed to take traffic school (but the judge can grant it), however they will not impound your car for 25+, unless its also classified as reckless, not are not the same and are assigned as independent infractions.

Dude i'm saying that going 110mph in a 55mph can get you a ticket even if the cop does not technically get you for speeding based on radar/pace/etc.

I wouldn't think that having a radar detector would have helped OP avoid the incident that precipitated this thread.

I must be misunderstanding. If he legally clocked you at at say 85 in a 55 and you are just cruising then its probably just a speeding ticket. If you are driving erradically or racing at ANY speed then yes you would get that ticket and speed with only be a contributing factor.

Well I will say that anybody that street races in the city probably wouldnt have been saved by a radar detector. Buildings tend to block quite a bit of radar detection for long distance.

Uhh ok you're wrong bud. Yeah its good for picking up RADAR, which 9/10 times in NY a state trooper is using LASER. Trust me I have the best radar on the market and I have still been hit with the laser twice. Sure its nice to know a cop is a mile down the road, but when they want to pull people for speeding they are using laser. You need a laser jammer to avoid those, radar doesn't do anything other than let you know your about to get a ticket.

Yeah it has saved me from radar, but I would never expect not to get any tickets because of it. I pick out cops way ahead anyways so no problem for me.

Sorry but I bought a performance car because I enjoy speed. If there is an open highway and I know there are know cops I have no issue getting on it.

Fwiw, it's not often cops are pulled over camping with laser in the metropolitan area in DFW.

In speed traps? Yes.

Picking up Ka band radar serves as a quite nice heads up
Yeah no doubt, but I'm talking speed traps which is where 90% of the time you are going to get a ticket around my area.

It lets gives you the heads up, which is nice, but all it takes is one cop lasering and thats that.

My V1 let me know there was a State Trooper a significant distance behind me a few days ago. A good radar detector coupled with a laser jammer will definitely save you most of the time. However, it depends on if laser jammers are legal in your state though.

I have the same radar and can vouch for its reliability. Quite honestly the only time I have ever gotten pulled over was when driving through Arizona..... Cops out there LOVE to light up your rader with "LASER" in which case it's already too late. But, only gotten two tickets in my life, both were in Arizona, both were within a week of each other (trip out there, and trip back) ..... Just don't go through AZ and you'll be fine is the moral of the story
