SES after passing in 4th gear

On my way home from work speed limit is 50, car in front is doing 43ish. I down shift to 4th and pass ( not aggressive), soon as i get to a little over 4k the car does a loud pop out the exhaust then sounds like it dies. A half of second later everything is back and its more aggressive and the ses comes on. Before i got home i did second gear all the way threw and it was perfectly fine but the ses light is still on. Can anybody tell me what happened????
