OK I know my smart key has been going dead, but I was just waiting on it to die before I go in for a fresh battery and reprogram. I drove over to my brothers for a min and when i went to leave my car wouldn't start "key not found" so pull smart key out and battery is dead..... well there's an old fashion key inside and I pull it out and stick it in, car lights turn on and car will turn over once "2seconds" and then I have to turn key all the way off and I might get two more tries before car won't turn over at all. Lights work and key turns in the slot.... wtf am I doing wrong ?

Driving a Mitsu.

Jk. It sounds like a car battery issue. Have you tried jump starting it?
Was gonna jump it but all the lights are working, but I don't live far so bro drove me home to get back up key, and car starts right up! So i leave the smart key out of car and use the old fashion metal key and car won't start... same symptoms as OP. I'm just freaked out the car won't start without a work smart key! Back up key almost dead too!!!

When removing the key from the remote, did you put just the key itself into the ignition? Instead, try sticking the remote back into the exposed part of the key when it's in the ignition. This worked for me when one of my remotes (with a brand new battery) no longer opened the door or started the car and appeared to need to be reprogrammed. Actually, using just the metal key itself and then opening the door triggered the alarm on my car until I stuck the remote onto the back of the key.

OK man that worked! Thanks a bunch... it doesn't click in backwards but if you put the connect the two the car will start. Weird I need to lay off the CRACK

Haha, the remote has an RFID tag in it. Unless you insert it backwards onto the valet key then the car has no way of verifying that is the proper key. It's an added layer for security so someone can't just copy your valet key and steal your car. Valet key will unlock doors and that's pretty much it.

Admittedly, the picture on the back of the valet key is not very clear in indicating this and unless you read the owners manual you wouldn't know. They should give a "quick start" guide with the car that points little but important things like this out.

The car is programmed ot accept the FAST or the key fob, not the other way around. So as long as the FAST or fob are not damaged, they will still work with the car.

BTW - I have never gotten my car to start without a good battery in the FAST unit. I have used the manual stated method of using the metal key with the fob connected to the and and it has never worked for me (when there was no battery in the fob).

Great! Glad it worked out.

Lets us know if you had to have it reprogrammed after new battery was installed?
Replacing a dead battery with a new one does not require it to be reprogrammed. I've replaced my batteries without this being necessary.

However, recently my smart key that I always use all of a sudden lost it's association with the car for whatever reason. I believe the manual warns against keeping the key too close to things that send out signals such as a mobile phone so that's probably what happened. At this point, the "dead" smart key would not unlock/lock the car even when testing it with another brand new battery. Using the key alone in the door would trigger the alarm and there was nothing that would turn it off, not even inserting the key alone into the ignition, which didn't start the car either for that matter. The only way to shut off the alarm and get it to start using the metal/valet key was to insert the dead smart remote backwards onto the key.

If you have an '08, a cell phone can erase the key, and it will never work. Happened to me once 30 miles from home.
had to go back home to get my spare to get the car started.

Got two new remotes from the dealer (theres a TSB for it), that supposedly fixes the problem.

Any idea what the tsb # is? Everytime I ask my dealer about a tsb they play dumb.

I had the same issue when my key died. Luckily I had a spare battery and the car was in the garage. Downside, I was supposed to have the car in storage that day so I pissed off the storage owner because i couldn't get it there that day.

F.A.S.T. KEY DOES NOT FUNCTION IN KEYLESS OPERATION SYSTEM (K.O.S.) MODE
No: TSB-08-42A-013
DATE: July, 2008
MODEL: See Below,

PURPOSE

Some customers of affected vehicles may complain they are unable to operate the Keyless Operation System (K.O.S.) using the F.A.S.T. key feature. The F.A.S.T. key (fob) may have lost its programming due to data in its memory being erased by electrical interference from a device such as a mobile phone. This can occur if the two devices are kept in close proximity to each other.
Should you confirm the condition, replace both of the customer's F.A.S.T. keys with improved parts that will reduce the possibility of accidental erasure of coded data due to electrical interference.
AFFECTED VEHICLE(S)

2008 Outlander
2008-09 Lancer
2008 Lancer Evolution
Affected vehicles built prior to May, 2008.
REPAIR PROCEDURE

The following conditions must be confirmed in an environment that is free from interference from electronic accessories, mobile phones, or facilities emitting strong electrical signals that could affect K.O.S. communication.

* You are unable to turn the ignition knob from the "Lock" position. Also, "Missing Key" is displayed on the MID screen when trying to turn the ignition knob.
* Generally, no DTCs will be stored in the PCM, however, DTC B1A08, B1A09, B1A0A or B1A0B may be stored in some occasions. If DTCs other than these are stored in PCM memory, do not continue with this TSB. Diagnose and repair per the service manual.

Replace the F.A.S.T. keys with an improved part if your evaluation confirms BOTH of these conditions. Refer to the service manual or the AESP (Advanced Electrical Service Procedures) study manual and use the MUT-III to register the new F.A.S.T. keys to the vehicle. Remember to register RKE functions for the new keys as well.
Customers should be reminded that the emergency key stored in the F.A.S.T. key can be used to start the vehicle when the K.O.S. system is not functioning. Dealers should advise customers to to review their owner's manual for instructions to prevent unnecessary towing in the future. See below.

Ok so both my batteries are fine because the car will work with the physical key and the fob attached while in the ignition. I ran into the same problem as another post, I changed out my shifter bushings in the cabin and under the hood and now the car is giving me the "keyless operation required" text. I read through the manual a lot and it appears that one of the sensors or readers that detects the key has a detection point in the center console area. So I'm guessing I tripped a wire or something?

So yeah, I can start the car now but do I have to take it to the dealer to get the code cleared and my smart key to work again? Or is this something I can reset within the car/ecu?
