The real difference comes when you turn the VSA off. Then the STi becomes less impressive than the Mitsubishi: less precise, less accurate and with less bite. This isn’t meant to denigrate the Impreza, though; it’s still an amazingly effective way of covering ground at a serious pace. The strong, fade-free brakes are worthy of particular praise.

But with all the provisos about Japanese spec and Japanese roads read into the record, here’s the deal: the Subaru just isn’t as much fun as the Evo. Both cars are packed with astonishing amounts of technology, but it’s the Mitsubishi that manages to feel simpler, more instant and more down-to-earth when being driven in the manner in which these cars are made to be driven.

On a twisty road it’s an absolute five-star joy, and petrolheads should be slobbering with anticipation of its arrival. Yes, the STi is better made, more refined and less boy racer-ish. We suspect it is ultimately faster too. But it’s first blood to the Evo. Prepare to want one.
has the evo x ever lost a review to the '08 sti?

Hmm, good question. I'd need to review past reviews, but the general consensus on the 08s is that while the STI has better straight line performance the Evo X is better around a track and is just a more fun car to drive.

I saw one today in the flesh, in red. A GSR with what looks like the Lancer GTS wing (I'm in Canada, BTW, and we don't get the SSS package). I guess this is the 'small' spoiler, rather than a lip spoiler we were expecting.

The trunk is quite modest, so if you carry anything more than an attache I'd suggest roof racks :) The interior is not great, but it is OK. I like the STI interior better, and my Legacy interior is much nicer.

Damn, the Evo X is sexy looking! Tons of young folks were drooling over it at the stealership in Langley. Some day, some day...my LGT will be paid off in a few years and I can look at maybe getting a track car like the Evo. In the mean time I'll juice up my sleeper wagon with the car seat in the back :) and hopefully I'll be able to drive my wife's MX-5 once in awhile, though I don't think she'll let me track it!
