I need your help on deciding which tire choice to go with. I bought a new 2013 Lancer Evolution MR in March this year.
A month ago with around 7,000 miles I rotated my tires (Stock Advan A13) and I noticed that the front tires were extremely worn on the inner edge.
I immediately went to Mitsubishi and they told me that it was the tire, Yokohama told me it was the car, went back to Mitsubishi where Mitsubishi did an inspection and determined that nothing was wrong with the car.
Long story short, Yokohama agreed to partially cover replacement tires.
Initially, I had intended to go stick with the Advans for 2 summers and go with the Winter/Summer approach. I live in Chicago and I recently got a new job and I barely drive my car anymore so I am thinking of going the All-Season route.
My question is, considering that the inner edge wears so much, what are some tires that will wear most evenly? I've heard good things about the Continental DWS.
If for any reason you will drive in snow and cant afford 2 sets of tires, get all seasons. Michelin and Bridgestone are my two favorite brands. You should also get an alignment because it sounds like you have uneven wear. It could be normal, but others have stated stock alignment is pretty bad. Lastly, you need to rotate the tires more often. Think every oil change.

No it does not. SOunds like somebody never got an alignment. I have ran my current tires Mich PSS 28,000 miles and I rotate them every ohter oil change. I have 0 wear issues.
Yes the Conti DWS is a perfectly fine AS. But I find All Seasons on an evo to be blasphemy.
They are ok but DO NOT drive on them in the snow and ice. I got caught in a snowstorm last winter and was embarrassed, plus they are summer tires not all seasons.

haha I almost didnt respond cause I knew you would say that, but honestly. The V12 is really only good as a DD tire on a car that is not performance oriented.
To be clear: it kind of sucks as a performance tire on the Evo.
Yeah that's more or less what I read about them prior to purchase. I went with it for no other reason that I DD my car currently without it ever seeing the action it was meant to (for now). To that end, they have been fair to me for the cost & usage they receive.
At first I decided to buy the Conti DWS at a local discount tire, I thought the sidewalls were too soft compare to the Advan (of corse DWS is a not high perfomance tire). I went back after a week and ask them if they have other tires that is close enough stiff sidewalls compare to the original tires. They suggested the Goodyear Eagle F1 all season tire, they were right. So far the tires are good in snow, and so so in compacted snow or black ice. My car is daily driven.
Running all season in snow, while acceptable, i would still discourage. AWD only really helps accelerate in snow. You can argue it also helps turning but i think front-heavy-FWD is almost as good. IMO, snow tires are the best performance mod you can do for driving on the ice. Don't drive unsafely on the snow, but i suggest maximizing safety margin since ice can be so dangerous. They hold ice racing on Georgetown Lake here in CO when it freezes over, your class depends, basically, on which tires you run.
I had the DWS, before, and they were a very good tire. not the best snow traction compared to a few but good enough and the wet and dry traction were great for all seasons.
I just want to get in here and reccomend you get a custom alignment. I run ZERO TOE on all 4 corners and boy did it make a big difference. My MPG went up too. Alignment shops will give you shit for it, but if you find one that's cool with it, make sure you tell them, ZERO DEGREES TOE. I wasted money one time cause i said zero toe, and they just put it on the minimum manufacturer recommended alignment, which still gives you toe in.
Also, the closer to zero toe you have, the quicker you regain traction in "oh shit" situations.
Tires for winter really depend on what kind of conditions you need to deal with. When I'm not tracking my car for more than a month I run Bridgestone RE970s, which are similar to the DWS but are a tiny bit stiffer (or so I have been told). They are all season, which means the tread is very heard and will last many miles. I got them mainly so that I can get through chain control up to Tahoe. They have deep treads and are great in the wet, slush, and fresh snow. However, the down side of an all season is that they are not going to be great in icy conditions or deep snow. For that you need a true snow tire, which has a softer material and will wear almost as quickly as a high performance summer tire. And then there are studded tires, but I cannot comment on that being from Cali.
Continental DWS tires are great all season tires and affordable. I had them before. The ride is smooth, quiet and comfortable. Like others said, the sidewall is on the soft side. I have Conti PureContact now, and they're great tires also.
The DWS are a great tire-not sure if they're actually discontinued or not but they're still selling. Pirelli p-nero all seasons too.
I've driven the bridgesonte re970 in the snow on another buddy's X and I was shitting bricks everywhere. My friend managed to drift around me in a corner with his blizzaks since I was going to slow...
I was pretty dead set about the Conti DWS but they are being discontinued unfortunately... My other options are Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 or the Bridgestone RE970AS?
Of the tires available, the DWS tends to have a great EVO following. Moderate snowfall, shorter commutes, plowed roads, and AWD you could do fine with them. Otherwise, run a dedicated snow such as the Blizzak to ensure there's enough tire to get you home if it dumps.
AS/3. Great A/S tire if there is such a thing. Only issue I have with them is they "give suddenly" at the limit...at least a bit more suddenly than the DWS. You are more alert to the limit in the DWS and know when its just about to give. AS3, it holds and holds then more abruptly gives.
That said, you probably shouldn't be hitting the limits of the tires on the street anyways...
I'm using cheap chinese Antares Ingen A1 all season tires. They are very comfortable. They kind of suck, but they get better after wear-in.
