So on my way home this evening, I managed to destroy 4th gear in my car. I've been through 3rd gear twice, and now 4th. I need to cryo treat this trans. I'm getting tired of shearing teeth off of the gear.

19psi WOT 4th gear pull. At around 4500-5000RPM, the gear let go. So the car will be down for awhile while I'm building up the trans. Fun.

Anyway, I'd like to have a backup vehicle other than my motorcycle. I want something with utility that I can haul motors around in.

I'd be game for a pickup truck, a cargo van, or a wagon. It can't be a dodge. :p

It's gotta be reliable. My price range is sub $5K. It's gotta be a 96 or newer in good mechanical shape. Help a brotha out.

Chevy. A lot of my buddies are riding around with them as work trucks. Most older then 96. Check newspapers first then maybe craigslist, ******** are cheap.

P.S. Long ago I read cyro does nill. Talk to focus, time for straight cut :-D.

I know some reputable shops that cryo and have shown good results from them.

I'm not huge on Chevy, but I'd take it by the model and go by Consumer Reports ratings. IIRC, the Fords were more reliable. I wouldn't mind a late 90's tacoma or something either.

Been searching on craigslist, ebay, and autotrader. My zip is 08205 if you care to check stuff out yourself.

Hah. I wouldn't own a ford so we're at a crossroad. I'm just speaking from personal experience and I don't trust CR because they won't release their testing/rating methods. It could be bias on a number of levels.

A lot of the old toyota trucks are rare because they were such solid trucks, I buddy mine has an old 4x4 that he gets asked to sell weekly.

Like I said pick up a newspaper your more likely to find some guys whose owned the truck forever selling there. IMO the less owners the better.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Ford fan either, but I'm just going on their statistics. CR doesn't test themselves, they just collect data based on number of incidences per vehicle, etc etc and report the reliability based on surveys and such.

Yeah, less owners are more gooder.

So I found 3 potential pimp rides.

1-2002 Ford E150 White van with 200K miles on it. I'm guessing it would run me around $3K.

2- 1997 frontier XE, black, auto, 4cyl, 115k, AC. That's all I know about it thus far, as it's planned on being traded in tomorrow.

3-2000 White Ford F150 w/ 8' bed. Neglected exterior, but not damaged. The interior is filthy. I'd like to burn the seats and pick up "nice" ones at a junkyard. Seems to run fine. 127K miles. Auto trans, AC, power locks and windows. They're asking 5900 for that badboy.

I'm partial to the Nissan since I used to own a 96 Nissan pickup and had good luck with it. Only real issue with it was that the starter went out.

Input?

Vans are much CHEAPER. I'd look at Chevy Astro Vans you can pick them up for 2kish for one that could use an engine swap and 4k for a decent one.
