Alright guys,

First, I might as well just go out and say it for those of you too lazy to read. This BOV is absolutely fantastic, probably the best on the market for the evo. For those of you who aren't lazy, here's the rest of the review...

“Zomg you buyed a knock off BOV WTF BRO?!?!”

Well, technically, it sort of is, and this fact is the only thing I don't like about this valve. When someone looks under your hood and asks, “what is that, a knock-off greddy?” you can't exactly say no. Yes this has already happened to me and it's somewhat embarrassing... But this aint no shitty valve from ebay. This thing is good.

NGR Performance showed up in 2008. Their goal was to make a BOV that made the same noise as the old Greddy Type-S, but also had stronger internals. Yes, I said stronger internals. The Greddy Type-S was plagued with problems. It had a weak diaphragm that would rip and tear easily, a problem even the current RS suffers from. This causes leaks and compressor surge, many people also reported leaking from the adjustment screw area. The rest of the design, however, was very good. It's one of the only BOV's with an optional boost reference port underneath the diaphragm... This helps response if you decide to use it (our stock BOV has a built in boost reference under the diaphragm BTW). It came with two springs, a light one and a hard one. You could use them together or separately, and then you can tighten or loosen the spring tension... Very tunable. And of course there was the sound it made. It's not for everybody, but I love it myself, that “PsheeEeEe” puts a smile on my face every time.

So, this BOV was made to take all that was good about the Greddy Type-S, and keep them. It was also made to take what was bad about the Greddy Type-S, and fix it. They did a great job.

This thing is very responsive, off throttle surge is almost non-existent, and on throttle compressor surge does not happen anywhere, at all. I've had this on for almost two weeks now and I, no matter how hard I try, can not make it surge or “flutter” or buck. Not on the freeway or going uphill (or going uphill on the freeway). It handles part throttle situations just like the stocker, no matter what gear, I can hold it at part throttle, push it in and out etc, wont surge, wont buck, wont flutter.. It'll either hold shut or open up slightly, just like the stocker. A lot of the time it even works better than the stock one. For example, if I built up a small amount of boost under 3,000 RPM's, the stock one wouldn't open, you'd just hear “chchchchc” from the turbo, this one opens without trouble. I don't think this next thing is very common, but my stock BOV would open up on the freeway and get stuck... That's the real reason I needed to go aftermarket. The NGR doesn't do that, obviously.

Now I'll explain how I adjusted it. It comes out of the box in the softest setting with both springs installed, it drove pretty well this way, but the sound wasn't right and off throttle surge was too common. I took the cap off and removed the smaller (inner) spring. I ended up tightening it almost all the way down before I got the right setting. I chose not to use the lower boost reference port.

I think that's about it for the written portion, here's some pictures and videos.

I didn't get a picture of its innards when I pulled the cap off (wasn't thinking) but I can confirm this is what their diaphragm looks like,

Ok sound clips... They're from my phone so they aren't amazing, sound quality is pretty good if you watch in HD though.

Well that's that I guess. This is a great part and I highly recommend it. Whether you're looking for some noise without the common side effects, you need to hold more boost than the stocker can handle, or maybe your current BOV just sucks... This is a perfect solution.

Sounds good, but it does look like a greddy BOV

Much better diaphragm than the Greddy! This is what happens to Greddy diaphragms with a bit use... Costs $80 to replace it! The NGR seems to be much more durable, not a single bad review in the last three years. The NGR Type-S also comes with a 1 year warranty, Greddy does not warranty their "racing products".

I want to replace my crushed bov...too much studdering. The ricer in me loves the sound of a vented bov but I know they aren't good for the car. I've never heard of one that partially vents...would that really effect it too much? It just makes it a little rich between shifts ....and if it only vents half the amount it I wonder?
No studdering with this! The ones that partially vent all have troubles, they all have part throttle issues (AP, turbsmart, GFB etc). Mine is recirced, it's pretty loud.

I'm gonna try crushed stocker and if that doesn't please me (see no reason for it not to) then I will consider this over the much-hyped Synapse. I've found many things hyped on these forums to be just ehhh... so since this is the cheaper route I may try this first. Obviously not cheaper than crushed stocker though.
That thing is way over hyped, it still has part throttle issues. Mine does not, I'll see if I can manage a freeway video this week.

I have an APS twin vent and by design "partially vents" (if you want to call it that). full recirc under low to medium loads, recirc and vta under high loads. works perfectly, awesome drivability and no complaints what so ever. not to take away from this review or anything.

I have a stock crushed bov now and it studders especially in 5th gear. Not the end of the world but something I'd like to fix it possible.

Wow that is pretty loud for being recirculated, I just assumed it was venting. Now I'm sold. I'll be upgrading to this hopefully soon (few other goodies I want to get first).

Did it come with the adapter to install it?

I bought two of these from NGR at 2 different times, I love them, never had issues. I spoke with the owner of NGR when they first came out, they actually bought the rights to the type-s bov, and rebuilt the internals, which is awesome, I can say that the original Greddy Type-S, I had on my 600hp 98 GSX, and never ever had issues with it. I highly recommend this bov for anyone wanting to get away from stock.

Nice to know I'm not the only one running it, how long have you had it?

From the video it sounds like I would be perfectly happy with the sound it makes being recirculated. I just want to be able to hear it not wake the dead lol. Also I'd rather get a good adapter, not worried about spending a little more to get a quality part.
Might wake the dead if you vent it, I'm pretty sure it'd be loud as hell. Do you have an aftermarket intake? For the adapter, look at lancershop under the bov section for the 8/9. I was going to buy that one but I decided to be a cheap a sshole and bought my POS for $3.00 :duh:

i just sold it, but i ran if for 6 months both times, I bought the greddy flange adapter, costs about 30 bucks, but was perfect fit and the BOV was flawless

^Yes the APS does work very well on evos from what I've heard. The trouble is availability. It's hard to find an APS valve these days, I tried to get one a while back but after watching ebay for a few weeks I gave up. On the other hand, anyone can get a brand new NGR Type-S right now :)

Hey sorry to take so long, I've been in the process of moving cross the country (CA to NC) and I just got my internet up and running. You don't need anything to recirculate this one, the exit is designed just the stock one and is already the right size. The ATP flange should work, if you're weary I suppose you could contact Greddy and see if you can get one from them.

If you need help with the adjustment process feel free to ask!

Synapse gets thumbs up for me.
Awesome sound, looks cool.

I bought one of them from a forum member but when I did a tune, found out it was leaking. One of the orings was crushed inside.

Called Synapse, they repaired it right away.
I didn't have to provide receipt or anything.

Awesome service, plus you can run any boost on it.

I bought my NGR Type-S a few months ago and haven't had any issues. Sound is perfect and I have no leak issues but I am only running 25-26psi. I definitely recommend it. I had no known issues with the stocker either but I bought it for the sound and to be safe. I did buy the adapter from MAPerformance as well. It is a good product for the price.
