So i've seen i few builds on here.....and i think i like the FP turbo's. But and i could be wrong....both the Red and Black can hit 450...which is my goal. My question which one is safer to run on a stock block and would i need cams? Trying to finalize my parts list for build. Side question...1000cc injectors ok?

Green,Red,Black all of em can be "safe" on a stock block for a time until something gives. There are alot of guys running bigger turbos on stock bottom ends sucessfully. Keep the torque under 400 and you have less of a risk of something failing. Any upgrade is gonna put stress on the motor, just have a backup plan for when it fails b/c eventually it will, whether its 5 or 15k miles. Just the nature of the beast...

there have been about 5 threads in the past few weeks discussing the FP turbos and how they fair on a stock block general concensus is even the black can be ran if tuned to keep the boost and torque resonable but plan to have a build done in the future.

Someone may tell me other wise but I think 1000's will suffice for the 400hp range maybe 13's for the black. Also depends on if your running pump or E-85. Cams arent necessary but if you are already gonna be spending money whats a little more,no one is ever satisfied with one number. If a build is planned for the future may as well buy for the build and do it big!

yeah, once you upgrade the turbo on the stock block, the clock is ticking for something to give. Of course, it'll tick faster the more power you make...

There are more variables, like tune, driving style, things going lean for other reasons and so on, but you get the picture. If you run the stock block with an upgraded turbo, just *be prepared* for it to fail on you at some point.

So nothing is "safe" once you upgrade the turbo...the time bomb you speak of is just since i'm adding power i should expect something to eventually go wrong with the engine? Cause i'm debating just staying with what i have + a DP. I don't wanna have to worry about breaking my car everytime i open her up. I thought the stock frame turbo's were suppose to keep the reliability of the stock one, but boost power. Total newb question, but will the cams affect this even more? I baby my car alot...but wanna be able to put down above 400whp in my DD. My priorities are reliablility then power. I mean if i don't wanna build my engine and still run safe power i'm limited to bolt-ons?

how about porting the stock turbo? porting the intake manifold and exhaust manifold? i know there was a member in va beach that ported his stock turbo and hit 400 whp.

You can reliably DD a upgraded turbo as Im sure many on here do but when you are putting 400+ WHP on a block that normally sees maybe 250 in complete stock form something is gonna give eventually. But like stated before if you drive like and old lady and only bang on her once in awhile it very well may last you awhile but it may decide to break the one day you hammer on it. You cant expect it to last you a 100k miles with almost double its normal wheel HP not gonna happen. A good tune will go a long way also, I go by a statement Murlo made in a past thread " ya gotta pay to play"

And living in Glen Burnie the temptation to embarres the "lil homies" in there moms civic is always there...lol.

my plans for an upgraded turbo is to have it installed then buy a beater to drive most of the time and save on gas etc. that way my X will last longer and i won't be so tempted to go balls out on my way to work everyday. Also, i can save up for internals etc and have it ready whenever i feel like it instead of my engine telling me when he is tired of living.

Thinking the red might be my best option....get it tuned for safe torque ..should still get over 400whp. Sounds like if i take care of it i should safely be able to DD it for at least 30K more. Just need car to make it about a year or 2 after install...then i wil have enought tucked away to fix any major melt downs.

maybe you can put new connecting rods and bolts in there or something just for a lil more reassurance. i am thinking about doing that when i go this route

BTW..you guys rock..thank you for all your input...gonna look at my budget and see what i can do...i think my biggest fear is that once i go built engine...its no longer a DD as gas will suck to much and ride quality will take a big hit. Also, harder to return to stock if needed to, but sounds like having that extra beef is the only way to insure things don't go boom right away.
