On that last comment i cant drive with my heater on over 65ish in the winter, unless I'm not wearing a coat for some reason.. I might turn it on for the first 5 minutes to warm up on full but then have to turn it back down, and am still smelling it 30 minutes later. During the Summer/Fall when I smelt it I dont believe i had the AC/Heater on for the last couple hours of my trips, and I could still smell it, but mainly only outside the car and under the hood (smell wasnt being brought in through the hvac system).

Thanks!

Add mine to the list. Been wondering for a while what the smell was. Atleast now I know it's not just mine! I have a 2010 MR Touring. It seems to be worse when using the paddle shifters or in Sport mode with a little bit of "spirited" driving. Just replaced the Advans with Goodyears and the smell persists. It does not appear to be related to the tires. It always comes across to me as a burnt clutch smell, but that may just be my own paranoia after reading all the negative hype around the SST.

I have that burning rubber smell too. Looking at the previous posts, it doesn't look like it's a reliability issue, just a nuisance. I only get that smell when I have my vent on; could the blower fan be contacting something rubber and causing this?

I have a 2010 GSR 5speed with about 14,000 miles.

I just started noticing this same exact smell today and was really worried that I had issues like the clutch burning, etc... then I get on here and search to find out that I'm not the only one experiencing this. I don't notice it till I run the car kinda hard winding through gears from time to time. Its around 80F+ here so its getting fairly warm out but I wouldn't think weather has anything to do with it cause people are having the same problems in snow. Has anyone came to a conclusion as to what this is??

Btw- the guys that are taking there cars into the dealer to look at them, do you guys have any kind of performance mods?? I would like to have mine looked over but I'm kind of afraid to with some of the mods I have incase the try to pin-point it to certain mods which I'm about 90% sure its nothing due to mods cause there seems to be ALOT of issues with this.

The reason I thought that it could be the blower motor making contact with something rubber is that most people stated they noticed the smell coming out the vents and whether hot or cold, they had the blower motor running at that time.

Each dealer and mechanic is different about mods. It's best to play it on the safe side if you aren't acquainted with yours yet.

I'm trying to recall what the tech told me, something that basically attributed to a "new car smell". I really forget but he stated some chemical burning off, usually its done within the first few thousand miles. (sorry i dont remember anymore details, I'll ask him when I pick up my car this week see if he can recall).

To be honest I haven't been experiencing it much recently, although I've been driving more with the windows down, or maybe I'm just starting to adapt to the smell, or maybe it is wearing off like they said lol.

The reason I thought that it could be the blower motor making contact with something rubber is that most people stated they noticed the smell coming out the vents and whether hot or cold, they had the blower motor running at that time.
Sounds very plausible, was definitely on my list of suspects. I'll try to see if I am still noticing it over the next couple weeks.

Sounds good, please let us know what you find; we can't all have brain tumors! ;)

Could it be just that the turbo runs super hot? I think we all have noticed this smell from time to time, Check your coolent/oil lines going into turbo, may not be getting enough to cool the turbo like it should thus causing the rubber around it to heat up(not melt) but get to the temp where odors come out of it. I dont know, just a thought, I smell this all the time and think nothing of it

Wow, smelled this last night but wasn't the first time... Glad to see I'm not crazy
No, you are crazy.

I still don't have my car back so I really havent been able to verify much. About the turbo comment - I mean it's possible. Really anything could be heating up and heating up some nearby rubber or conduit, or some random chemical that the car was assembled with (the mitsu mechanics thought). Or just because differences in usage of the hvac system and external environment (even though in my initial experience it seemed to happen with quite different variables)

I took the car on a lot of long trips but most of it i was cruising out of boost and driving easy to get good mileage. I feel like it hasn't really been much a problem for me recently as it was the first 5-7500miles, and i'm driving the car a lot harder now.

Folks... not sure if it's just me but I personally notice that the funny smell somewhat smelt more often in winter time than summer.

Anyone?
Maybe, I did notice it "more frequently" in the colder months, however I certainly noticed it in the summer/fall months as well on several occasions. Although that was all during the first 5k miles of my car.

Only next winter will tell for sure, lol.

just seeing if there was any updates to this thread
I got some burning oil smell from the front of my car...comes thru the vents too
I checked everything...and smell seems to be coming from just below and behind the Mitsu logo...does anyone know what might be the cause of this

I do also have a burning smell everyday. It will smell especially when I park my car inside the garage. I tried finding the source. Mine smells a lot near the exhaust trunk area. Don't know if its the same thing. '11 GSR about 6k miles here.

hrm, I just had this burning smell the other day but it only lasted it a minute or so so I thought it was maybe something coming from outside the car (maybe another car). Only reason I really payed attention to it was because I just installed my intake the night before. I'll have to keep pay attention and see if it happens again.
