I just assumed this smell was my seat heaters... it gets really bad when both are on high. smells like burning plastic... i have the SST trans and only use s-sport with paddles. (basicly i should have bought a gsr but wanted the conviance of city driving in auto) which i never use..
First, the SST is better then the manual, don't let anyone make you think differently :).
I also get a "gas" smell when drivng hard hard hard close to rev limit and or hitting rev limit on HOT days +30C when the tank is either full or 3/4 full but never get the smell below half. and my FPR hose is zipp tied and secure.
figure the smell comes from some sort of leak and or vent.. gas tank vent? not sure but it fills the cabin to the point where your choaking on gas fumes. happends mostly on the road course but had it happen a couple times on the road.
If it's a gas smell it doesn't sound like what I was having. It could be the gas tank vent, spec GET RADs post for pics, fairly easy to check if that's the problem. Or is it just clutch smell maybe?

Sorry, too many posts to check each one.. So maybe this was already mentioned - check under your rear seat. Pull it and check the foam as many have found that the foam was getting too hot/ burning and so the smell occurred. Again, apologies if this was already identified and I am being redundant.

am i the only one with an MR that just assumes it's the brakes and clutch? i only smell it when i drive hard. might want to also check the trunk. heard that the exhaust gets hot and might burn/melt the plastic in and round the spare tire area.

I have an MR and when driving hard... It also smells like if something is burning/melting... I want to think that is breaks/tires... I've read that since it is a wet clutch, it shouldn't smell (and the TCU shouldn't let you burn it?)

I will double check the trunk/back seat next time

Regards,
SS

I had a weird smell coming from the cabin, ended up my rear passenger seats burning up because of the exhaust lol

Yes, this is it as I noted above. Just pull your rear seats people. Drive the car hard, exhaust gets hot, and starts to melt the foam.

No, by the rear seat...

Alright.... didn't have time to look but if that's the root cause, should that be a recall?

Next time if you get the same burnt smell, try to pop the trunk, open the spare tire compartment, check inside

Yes, I've decided it is a recall. Further, I've determined that if the issue can't be resolved easily a new rear seat should be provided to each afflicted. I'm not positive but it seems I might have slightly less control over Mitsubishi US than I had originally hoped and so am not sure if they will approve my memo regarding the recall. Cross your fingers.

In the meantime, check under your seats and find the burn marks. If so, put down some insulation tape (Home Depot) and slice out the burned foam from your seat(smells better). Worst case, contact me as I have a brand new seat for sale cheap. I'll let you know if the head of Mitsubishi contacts me regarding the recall. I'm pretty sure they will.

So what's the verdict here? I've just noticed this smell after a long highway drive. Thought it wa my tires but nope definitely not!

Funny I smell burnt rubber myself from time to time. Few weeks ago it was burnt plastic from a bag getting stuck to my exhaust but recently vie been smelling burnt rubber myself
Sorry to bring this one back from the dead but my wife's Ralliart Sportback was smelling really bad after she would park the car in the garage. I started by looking under the hood and I couldn't find a thing. Pulled the spark plugs thinking that oil was getting by them and cooking. Then I got scared that the transfer case was leaking and burning on the exhaust. I checked the transfer case and the rear diff and no leaks (so happy those weren't leaking) . So then I saw the post about the plastic bag and went back under to find a black bag melted around the catback. I was surprised i didn't see it while I was checking the other items but what happened was that during the these winter months all the grime and mag chloride camouflaged the bag. I probably scrapped it off for 30mins before it was all off. Super happy that it was that simple of a fix. Thank you forums!
