Do Test Pipes Require a Tune?

Basically your thread not only explained to me tht Im a n00b (spot on), but it says that a tune is not mandatory, but recommended. Why recommended? Because my engine will fail if I don't tune these bolt ons? It's still not a yes or no answer, so no one is there to decide for you, you make the decision yourself at your own risk?

Maybe we can hear it from experience, did anyone run a test pipe with no tune and has no issues since then?

I think the better question is why would you not get a tune to take advantage of the performance part? The only thing a resonated test pipe does is add power. The AMS part is not cheap either so to buy it and not take full advantage of what it does is a waste. It's also a super easy install so I'd wait until u can install a bunch of parts and get one tune. It won't hurt the car but the car will not run as good as it should.

A guy with a cat back and an intake just threw a rod because he ran it without a tune. It's on these forums. I suggest you get a tune. Personally think that thread should say it *requires* a tune since there are cases of people over boosting dramatically with just a test pipe.

Every time a thread like this pops up I imagine the OP speaking like the guy from the beginning of Pineapple Express (beep badeep beep bleep like porky pig). Just saying.

Since i refuse to become chaz, at the minimum get a cobb AP to flash an OTS map on or find one of our many etuners (im guessing you dont have the items required to log however).

Tune.

The evo isnt like a n/a civic. its tuned from the factory in just the right way to perform. its like drinking from a straw with a cotton ball in the middle. you get used to drinking that way and then all the sudden the cotton ball is gone. But you still drink with all the force of the cotton ball still being there. Your brain gets confused. Why am I getting so much more drink?
Your brain is the evo ECU. Except instead of sucking in, think of spitting out.
You lose your cat is like losing the cotton ball.
A $400 tune is not worth it if you're only adding a test pipe. Save your parts if you have to buy a little at a time and do it all at once. At a minimum, intake and full exhaust, then tune.

I ran a TP + CB for about 2 weeks prior to being able to get started on my tune and honestly the car drives funny ( i have an MR). It seemed to screw around with the SST parameters and the car would bog down on shifts in normal mode (fixed after tune).

I grandma'ed the car for those 2 weeks and I ran it always in self-shifty.

But yes as said above, i'd invest in purchasing a few parts, then getting a tune done right away.

Edit: It might seem like a lot now, but an experienced tuner can make huge gains on the MR frame. (maybe not in HP, but in drivability and overall performance)
