Tuning Options with Windows 8

OK, so currently I am happily tuned by Chet via Cobb AP. The laptop I used to log with took a turn for the worse and I decided to scrap it, due to repair costs. It seems to get a decent computer I am not just wasting money on, ie decent process, ram, etc., I will have to get a new Windows 8.

Windows 8 is a pain in my ass!!!

I purchased a decent laptop from BestBuy and downloaded all the needed software to datalog and tune. Everything worked just peachy except the serial to USB cable. After buying 3 different cables and each one not working, I gave up and have been at a stand still since. I tried older drivers and fully updated drivers and neither would work.

So right now I am weighing the options and seeing what others have done. Considering buying a copy of Windows 7 and just downgrading the OS, which seems retarded because eventually Cobb will have to be more Windows 8 friendly. My other option is possibly to sell my Cobb, and retune via Tactrix and whatever program that works with it, but only if it is more Windows 8 friendly.

Anyone had experience with Tactrix and Windows 8? From the technical side will downgrading fix my issues possibly and let me use my old serial to USB? Either way I am out money for whatever option is best, just want to make sure I don't waste any money.

**Sidenote** the cables I used were recognized by Windows, everything was turned on properly in ATR, it would just freeze the program and computer if I tried to log or view the AFR data.

It's not the tuner software that's the problem. It's the serial to USB cable. Most of the drivers aren't supported in Windows 8 yet.

I thought the same thing, but I went to the cables websites updated through that with the drivers that were supposedly for Windows 8 on all 3 cables. Two from BestBuy and 1 from RadioShack.

I know sometimes they list as being Windows 8 compatible and really aren't, how far out do you all see the cables catching up to Windows 8? I would really like to be able to log just for safety and peace of mind reasons.

Even on Windows 7 I've had to manually select a driver version to get certain converters to work. Which one are you currently using? I'm running 1 Windows 7 machine and 2 Windows 8.1 machines so I can try and do some testing.

I personally tried 8 and 8.1, two different laptops, and 3 different cables.

I am not sure what you mean manually select the driver version. I know I installed the drivers from the CD, which are outdated in any box lol, and it didn't work. Then tried updating them through the manufacturer website to the most current versions and still didn't work. I deleted the original version of the drivers before installing the updated current ones from the internet.
