out of the box i cant think right now even one, if you use the X base GSR as a bench line.

 

I don't think you'll get many positives. There are a few in the area of price / handling, but not really anything equivalent or better.

I guess the STi would be closest, but it seems like the overwhelming opinion is that the X handles better.

Maybe some kind of kit / track car.

 

I heard good things in terms of handling about the new scion rwd coupe (name escapes me for some reason), but it's underpowered in its first iteration. Other than that, there's no other NEW car I'm aware of.

Yeah I didn't think any car could compare to the Evo in terms of handling. A guy around here owns an RX8 and he said "my car is unmatched in handling". Before I put him in his place I want to make sure the Evo is better lol. I haven't done an Auto X yet (weather), but I can't wait.

This is true... and I think the Rx8 is much cheaper than the evo as well.

Those who mentioned the STI, Elise and 911, according to Edmunds handling test only the GT-R and R8 beat the 3rd place Evo X (MR) which was front of the '08 911, '08 STI and '08 Elise.

I researched and tried to find something better. Only the STI comes close.

 

Put some a few suspension bits on a Toyota Yaris and you'd be surprised how fast it goes around an auto x course...

 

I've seem the hatch STI do some amazing things both road rave and dirt rally. IMO the hatch > Evo

What about s2ks? When I had my Z a guy in an s2k passed me on the dragon like I was standing still. I wasn't really pushin it, but I wasn't goin slow either. I'm sure he had a lot more experience on that road than I did too tho!

 

S2000 is a blast I had 2 before my evo. Still kinda miss it

 

I also had 2 S2000s before I bought my Evo. I was going to say the S2000, but I figured I'd get chewed out for it. From my experience, the S2000 has more potential in the hands of a competent driver. The difference is that it takes a VERY talented driver to take the S2000 to the limit (the best way I can describe it is that the car is literally trying to murder you). The Evo can be driven stupid fast by even a very incompetent person. I've autocrossed both cars, tracked both cars, and I've driven both cars up at the Dragon more times than I can count. The S2000 is a momentum car. The Evo is big and heavy and only handles the way it does because it is robocar. The S2000 handles better, from a purists point of view, anyway.

 

How does it handle compared to your X?^

 

It felt stiffer. I think it stopped quicker too but there is like a 700 lb difference. But the evo for the most part feels pretty close. That's why I got an evo over an sti. I suggest driving one if you get the chance. I wish Honda would have made a new one
On side note it was a lot more expensive to mod and most engine stuff didn't do too much. Evo isn't cheap either

I would put S2000 on the list. Probably not much else. Of course Miata, FRS, RX8 get by with a huge weight advantage. Evo has advantages over them as well in terms of feedback and steering as well.

A fully loaded Evo gets into entry level Corvette ranges as well.

I would not put a Mustang on the list, or anywhere close. There is a difference between going around a track quickly and having good handling.

 

What about a mini works Cooper S? the weight of the car, dropped, short wheel base and super charged engine real does make for a fun car around the corners.

 

They are turbo now.

 

golf r isnt that bad either, drove my friends the other day and shit was nimble quick and agile.

 

i absolutely hate posting this but maybe a hyundai...did he say faster or better handling...id say those r spec genesis 5.0 or the genesis coupe r spec are viable somewhat but would never really be "better" than an evo.

 

my friend has a 2009 civic with with coilover. and he said i might be faster but he can handle corner better than me. im abit curious. but i haven't raced him on Auto X yet

The only thing I could think that might POSSIBLY be better handling (for the money) would be a C5 ZO6 Vette with some good tires. Those can be had for around the cost of a high mileage '08 X GSR or a cherry IX.
