Levering back the filter clip seemed too risky for someone ham-fisted like me. :p

If you have a bit of narrow-wall pipe, like that black reticulation pipe stuff, you can slip a short length of it over the filter locking clip. That enables you to remove/replace the filter without the clip getting in the way - and without damaging it.

Is the VW/Audi fluid compatible with our transmission? Is it cheaper?

You dont want to overfill your tranny...i over filled by 1 -2 qt when I changed mine...a little noisy driving in 6th but at the track it would quickly overheat. Drained it out to put a second cooler in and 8qts came out! Refilled it with 7 and it runs perfect

To the OP...Excellent write up!! Thank you for the help. Finished an hour ago.

That's what the Manual says to do. I just drained it, and refilled it. Silky smooth after

FWIW, here's a nice training video from Volvo that shows how to change the fluid and filter on their Powershift transmission.

Modify, can you comment on Volvo's use of the level plug to measure quantity vs. Mitsubishi's catch-and-measure method?

Volvo/Ford MPS6 is more sensitive on oil leveling than the EVO/Lancer/Outlander SPS6, caused by the design og the housing. That's why the oil leveling procedure is more complicated.
On Evo/Lancer just drain the oil and fill back 5.5 liters (also with filter change). If you drain the oil cooler and cooler hoses completely (doesn't matter if you ran an additional cooler in series) , fill in 6.3 liters and drain it after warm up, than fill in 5.5 liters.
Do not fill in more, this has an impact on temperature (will increase with more oil).

This just does not make sense to me, why is there a leveling screw on the side of the transmission then?

When I changed my oil I purposely overfilled with 8L and when the gearbox got to temp (40°C) I drained the excessive oil through the side bolt while leaving the car running and in P.

All in all I managed to fill around 7,5L, prety much the same amount as came out of the trans. (fully drained everything)

Works fine for more then 10.000 miles

Modify, have you found the trans is working better with less oil?

Has anyone tried these off ebay?

TC-SST Transmission Filter $89.00

That outdoes any vendor on this site or anywhere else I have found. Fred Bean Parts still holds best price on Diaqueen SSTF-I.

Now if FBP is reading this I would be willing to go with you if, you give free shipping as the price difference would be the same if you shipped for free. And thats free shipping on both the filter and the 2- 4Liter cans of Diaqueen. I used your site to see how much to ship to 83714 and the price difference is about same.
